Department of Modern Languages (DML) Frequently Asked Questions

 Q: What is the DML?
A: The Department of Modern Languages in the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University.

Q: What are Modern Languages?
A: The Department of Modern Languages houses 6 languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

 Q: What programs are offered in Modern Languages?
A: We have two masters programs: MA in French, MA in Spanish; and undergraduate majors in French, German, Russian and Spanish. In addition we have minors in: French, German, Russian and Spanish. We also have an Italian Certificate program.

Q: How do I know where to start in my language?
A: You will need to take the language placement test unless you have had NO previous high school experience.

Q: Do I have to take a placement test?
A: Yes, the placement test is mandatory to start in the proper level, unless you have had no previous high school language. If this is the case, no, you do not have to take the placement test.

Q: Where do I go to take the placement test?
A: Lab 115 in Gordy on the first floor. Operating hours are generally M-Th- 8am-8pm; F – 8am – 5pm; Sat – closed; Sun 2pm-8pm.

Q: Do I have to schedule an appointment in order to take the language placement test?
A: No, you do not.  The lab (Gordy 115) is open 8am to 8pm Mon.- Thurs.  8am-5pm on Friday and 2pm to 8pm on Sunday. They are closed on Saturdays.

Q: What do I need to bring to take the placement test?
A: You will only need your OU ID.

Q: Where do I go to get my results?
A: You will go to Gordy 283 on the second floor with the sheet given to you by the lab assistant.

Q: What if I feel I was placed too low?
A: If you feel you where placed too low be sure to attend class and talk to the instructor. The instructor will let you know where to go from this point.

Q: How do I get a pink slip into a class?
A: You will need to see someone in Gordy 283 and discuss the reason for the pink slip. We will issue a pink slip if it is approved.

Q: Is there a test I can take to place out of my language requirement?
A: You must take the placement test in Gordy 115. If you are a BA student, a score in the 300/3000 level will complete your language requirement. If you are a BS, a score in the 200/2000 level will complete your language requirement.

Q: What if none of the open sections fit my schedule?
A: Contact Modern Languages in Gordy 283 second floor or give us a call at 740-593-2765 and we will advise you on what to do at this point.

Q; What if I want to take a class that is full and other sections are open?
A: We will not pink slip you into the class that is full. You must take a section which is open.

Q: Can I start lower or higher than my placement results?
A: No, you must start in the level where you place. If you have questions you may call the main office: 593-2765

Q: Does Modern Languages offer any study abroad programs?
A: Yes, we offer programs in France, Austria, Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, Italy, Russia and Brazil. See the DML website for details: http://modlang.ohio.edu/study-abroad/

Q: How do I study abroad?
A: You will need to contact Walter International Education Center (Office of Education Abroad – OEA) or visit the web site: http://www.ohio.edu/educationabroad/

Q: I want to apply for a TA position.  How can I do that?
A: You will need to apply through the Graduate College at http://www.ohio.edu/graduate/index.cfm or call 1-740-593-2800 and submit the proper forms, and then the committee will review and advise you from there.

Q: How do I make an appointment with the Chair, Dr. Partyka?
A: You will see Heather Young at the front desk of Gordy 283, e-mail Heather at youngh1@ohio.edu or call 740-593-2765 to schedule an appointment. You may also email the chair at partyka@ohio.edu.

Q: How do I schedule for class?
A: You will go to: http://www.ohio.edu/registrar/info/redirects/webregistration.html

Q: What do I do if the system will not let me schedule for class?
A: You will need to seek assistance in the office of the registrar located in Chubb Hall. You can also give them a call at 740-593-4191 or email at registrar@ohio.edu.

Q: Where do I go to see how my credits transfer?
A: You will need to contact the directory (740) 593-1000 and then ask to be transferred to Wilson Hall. They will then be able to assist you with how your languages credits will transfer. Or, call Randy Price directly at: (740)593-2844 or email at: pricer1@ohio.edu
