Three Year Spanish MA Program
Master of Arts in Spanish with an optional Concentration in TEFL
By virtue of an institutional agreement, Ohio University – Department of Modern Languages – in conjunction with the Universidad de Sevilla, Spain, offers a Three-Year Master’s Program in Spanish with a concentration in TEFL
Program Description: The Department of Modern Languages at Ohio University has established a three-year Spanish Master’s program with an optional concentration in TEFL in conjunction with the Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa) at the Universidad de Sevilla in Sevilla, Spain. This unique opportunity, which includes participation in a one-year exchange program with the Universidad de Sevilla, will be available to one student annually beginning in the 2009-2010 academic year.

Coursework: Students have two curricular options. They may work towards fulfilling requirements for the TEFL certificate or select from courses offered by the Universidad de Sevilla.
Student Services: Ohio University students will enjoy all of the services and privileges of Universidad de Sevilla students.
Degree Plan:
Year One: The student will work toward fulfilling requirements for the Master’s Degree Program in Spanish at Ohio University (Athens campus).
Year Two: The student will spend October—June in Spain at the Universidad de Sevilla. S/he will work toward completing requirements for TEFL certification and gain practical language experience by serving as a language assistant for 25 hours per week. The student could earn his/her TEFL certification by completing a summer TEFL practicum upon their return to OU.
Year Three: The student will return to Ohio University to complete the remaining requirements for their Master’s in Spanish degree.
Degree Awarded: Graduates of the program will receive a Master of Arts in Spanish issued by Ohio University and a TEFL certificate issued by the Department of Linguistics.
Transcripts: Official transcripts for the one-year exchange will be issued by the Universidad de Sevilla.
Gain practical language experience:
In addition to taking TEFL courses abroad, the student will serve as an English language assistant to the Universidad de Sevilla. Students may be asked to translate websites, telephone calls, emails and other basic documents. In addition, they may be asked to provide instructional support to university staff.
Students will contribute 25 hours per week in exchange for a monthly stipend of approximately €700.
Eligibility requirements:
In addition to meeting the admission requirements for the Spanish Master’s program, applicants to the Sevilla program must possess:
• Native or near-native English ability
• An advanced level of proficiency in Spanish or permission of the faculty director
• Knowledge of English grammar and American culture
• A demonstrated commitment to second language instruction
