Overview and Goals of the Course:

Welcome to Russian 111! This quarter we will be learning the Russian alphabet and some basic Russian expressions. We will cover the Alphabet Unit and Units 1-3 of Golosa, Book One. By the end of the quarter you will know the Russian alphabet and should be able to greet people formally and informally, to talk about where you’re from, what language(s) you speak, and what and where you study.

Course Requirements:

1. Attendance. Class participation is vital for your success. Four (4) absences will be allowed; after that each absence will reduce your attendance grade by 1/3 of a letter: a fifth absence will give you an A-, a sixth a B+, and so forth. I will make exceptions to this policy for documented excused absences as listed in the 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog, page 27.

Significant lateness (10-20 minutes) will result in subtraction of 1/2 credit on that day’s attendance grade. If you are more than 20 minutes late, you will receive no attendance credit for that day.

You are responsible for all class material, including material from days you miss. You may pick up missed materials from the instructor.

Tests and quizzes may be made up in exceptional circumstances only.

The final examination will be on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7:00 pm. The only exceptions to this time will be those indicated on the Fall Quarter final exam schedule. Students who miss the final will receive a 0% for the exam.

2. Homework. Written practice is important in learning any language. You will have written homework assignments almost daily. You are allowed to miss turning in up to three (3) written assignments. After that each missed assignment will reduce your homework grade by one third. No late assignments will be accepted for full credit.  You can submit missing assignments within a week from the date it is due for a partial credit.  Each day of delay will reduce your credit for 1/3 of a letter: the assignment submitted in a day from the due date will give you an A-, in two days  – a B+, and so forth (Saturdays and Sundays excepted).  The assignments submitted later than in a week from the due date will not be accepted.

If you cannot make it to class on a particular day or did not bring your homework with you, you may turn in your assignment by 4:00 pm on that class day without penalty; in that case, leave your homework in the envelope on my office door, Gordy 329, or in my mailbox in Gordy 280, outside the Modern Languages office. Although you are not expected to turn in homework without any mistakes, you are expected to make a sincere effort in completing the assignment. You will not receive credit for homework that does not show evidence of such effort.

*Audio Materials

Audio materials can be found at Golosa website: http://www.gwu.edu/~slavic/golosa/

3. Tests, Quizzes and Compositions. There will be one (1) alphabet quiz, three (3) vocabulary quizzes, three (3) oral tests, three (3) unit tests, and a final written exam. The low grade of the 3 unit tests will be dropped. If you miss a unit test, the zero from that test will be automatically be the low grade dropped. The same applies to vocabulary quizzes; however, the alphabet quiz grade will not be dropped. The vocabulary and alphabet quizzes will be averaged, and the composite grade will equal one unit test. No oral quiz grades will be dropped.

4. Grading

Unit Tests and Written Quizzes (3@10) 30%

Final Examination 13%

Oral Quizzes (3@7) 21%

Homework 14%

Attendance 10%

Participation 12%

* Participation Scale

Your class participation will be evaluated on this scale every unit for points towards your final grade for the term:

4 – Student is always prepared for class: always reads the grammar material in advance, memorizes the required vocabulary, completes all assignments and actively participates in all class activities.

3 –  Student is regularly prepared for class: regularly reads the grammar material in advance,  memorizes the required vocabulary, completes assignments and actively participates in all class activities.

2 – Student is sometimes prepared for class: sometimes reads the grammar material in advance and memorizes the required vocabulary; completes some assignments; participates in all class activities; is disrespectful to other people in the classroom.

1 – Student is seldom prepared for class; seldom reads grammar material in advance and memorizes the required vocabulary; seldom complete assignments; participates in some class activities; is disrespectful to other people in the classroom.

0 – Student is never prepared for class: never (or almost never) meets any of the above requirements and/or is disrespectful to other people in the classroom.

If you are not yet registered as a student with a documented disability, please, talk to me and contact the Office of Disability Services at 740-593-2620 in Crewson House.

6. Graduate Students taking the course as 511.

If your performance level for the term is B or above, you will receive a final grade of CR. If your performance level is B- or lower, you will receive the letter grade as earned.

7. Academic Conduct.  Cheating on examinations or plagiarism in any form (including submitting the work of other students as your own) will result in penalties which could include an F on the assignment and referral to University Judiciaries for further inquiry and possible disciplinary action. Please review the section entitled “Academic Misconduct” on page 32 of the 2010-2011 Ohio University Undergraduate Catalog.

You are welcome to consult with tutors, more advanced students, or native speakers;  however, your assignments must be your own work. If anyone else writes, rewrites, or edits your homework, that will be considered academic misconduct.

8. Electronic Devices.

The use of electronic devices, such as cell-phones, laptops, ipods etc, is not allowed during the class and will affect your participation grade.

9. Tutoring. Russian tutors have traditionally been available, if you need extra help. Contact the Academic Advancement Center in Alden Library 101, at 593-2644, or on the web at http://www.ohiou.edu/aac/tutoring/.

10. How to be contacted. Communication via email is crucial.  You must check your Oak account or the alternative account often. The best way for the instructor to reach the entire class or any of you individually, should that be necessary, is by e-mail through your oak accounts. If you do not currently use your oak account, please set it to forward messages to whatever e-mail address you are using. For information about e-mail forwarding, see the OU Communication Network Services website: http://technology.ohio.edu/email/If you are using an alternative email account, please, let me know your alternative email address.

11. Extra Credit

You can earn extra credit for attending Russian Conversation Hour (TBA) and Russian Film Club (TBA).

12. Conversation Hour. If you would like more opportunity to speak or listen to Russian, you are welcome to visit the weekly Russian conversation hour.  I will make regular announcements about conversation hour via email.

13. Study Abroad. Ohio University has a biannual Spring Quarter study abroad program in Moscow. Students who will have completed Russian 212 by the departure date will be eligible to apply. You could be in Moscow for the Spring Quarter of 2012! There are program brochures outside the Modern Languages office, Gordy 283, and outside the Education Abroad office, Lindley Hall 185.

14. Copyright.

The lectures, classroom activities, and all materials associated with this class and developed by the instructor are copyrighted in the name of Jamilya Nazyrova on this date Sept. 6, 2010.

COURSE SCHEDULE

The following outline is intended as a guide. I will make every effort to adhere to the assignments and particularly to the quiz and test dates listed here. Please be aware, however, that I could make changes to this outline, in order to serve the needs of the class. If I change an assignment, I will email the new assignment for that day.  (If I do not email an assignment, please complete the assignment listed here for that day.) If I change a quiz or test date, or a composition due date, I will give at least two class days’ notice.

Unless otherwise specified, pages indicate the Golosa textbook. Assignments from the workbook are so indicated.  The phrases “go over” and complete mean to read or do an exercise and prepare the answers orally.  The phrase “write” means that you must turn in the assignment(s) including both TB and WB exercises.
